John Jensen Obituary

Dr. John "JJ" Jensen

July 13, 2024

Augusta, Kansas - During the late afternoon of Saturday, July 13, 2024, our husband, father, brother, and friend took his last drive in his dream car a 69' Camaro to the afterlife. Dr. John "JJ' Jensen was a man that was larger than life. He had the uncanny ability to make everybody feel like a friend. Though he had been born in Topeka, he grew up in Hutchinson, KS with his 3 younger brothers. Before he set his sights on becoming a doctor, JJ held down a variety of jobs including a DJ at a local radio station, as well as served in the United States Army. John is the first to admit that he bled crimson and blue and was always a proud Jayhawk. Once he completed medical school through the University of Kansas, he began practicing medicine in Wichita and continued to be an anesthesiologist until his passing.

Beyond being a superb doctor, JJ had a love for antiques. He loved to search antique stores for old radios, cameras, and guns. Then his love of automobiles took hold and the Jensen Company was created. He taught himself how to put together so many different types of cars. He really didn't have a favorite car, but which car would be the most challenging to rebuild.

John had a compassionate heart when it came to animals in need of a home. Several times, John went to look at a car and came home with a llama, or a donkey, a goat, a swan, a longhorn calf and of course dogs. That sneaky man put us on the foster list at the Humane Society for dogs in need of help. And he always would say it was just until the dog was better…and that is how so many of our furry friends came to call this home

But John's most important thing in the whole world was his boys. Listening to friends and colleagues this week talk about John and how much John shared about his children with people made me love him even more. He was so proud of the men that they were becoming. JJ was taken too soon from us. He leaves behind a legacy of four wonderful, caring, funny, smart sons, each of which looked up to him.

It is hard to sit down and try to write a few words about someone who meant the world to his family and friends.

With that being said, the boys and I would like to invite any of you to come join us for a Celebration of JJ's Life on Saturday, July 27 from 3-6 PM at the Applejack Pumpkin Patch, 10007 SW Indianola Rd., Augusta, KS. Bring your stories and photos to share with boys and family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67219; or the American Heart Association, 5800 Foxridge Dr., Mission, KS 66202.

Just saw article in medical society bulletin. I was in shock. I have worked with John for many years. He provided top notch care to my OR patients. We share same passion for antiquities. We would go on and on about finds before each case. I will miss him and his service to medicine. Dr. Grant Rine ...radiation oncology

JJ was one of the most outspoken people I know. His sense of humor is what stood out most to me. I enjoyed many car conversations with him in sharing the love of cars. He was a great human being and will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to all of you.
