In retirement, he continued to show his love of farming by collecting and restoring Allis-Chalmers farm tractors and equipment, and collecting farming memorabilia. Gus competed in tractor shows as far away as Illinois and Florida and he won many trophies along the way. He also enjoyed displaying and talking to others about his artifacts. He looked forward to wintering in Florida and made some close friends in his travels south.
