The universe lost a larger-than-life Irishman on Sunday, April 21, 2024, when God unexpectedly called John Patrick Kaney home. John was a lover of life and laughter and a fierce advocate for those he loved as well as for underdogs everywhere. John had a deep and abiding love for his parents, Pat and Dottie, and for his siblings.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles, and by his dear cousin, Michael Kaney, Jr.
John Patrick Kaney was a complex individual, not easily encapsulated in a few words. He was bold and brash and seemingly fearless, but he was also kind with a poetic sensitivity.
John was first and foremost a father to his beloved daughters Carly, Emily and Bridget. He never got to spend as much time with them as he would have liked, but they were on his mind constantly. He relished the good times, and the best times in his life were spent with his children.
John was an entrepreneur who was energized by bid deals and a philanthropist who took delight in easing the suffering of others.
John was an avid historian who had an equal interest in technology and the future. He delighted in music, especially the music of Jerry Garcia, and he loved movies almost as much as he loved St. Patrick's Day: two loves that resulted in his impromptu screenings of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People."
John was a sportsman: he love his Los Angeles teams and he bled Dodger blue, but he was drawn to the struggle of the underdog in sports in general. He relished the 0-2 hit, the two - out rally, and the come-from-behind win.
John was a ferocious competitor: a deft tennis player and a skilled golfer who once hit a hole-in-one.
John enjoyed many successful years in the food distribution business at Newport Seafood, in Seattle, WA.,
and at AMK / Kaney Foods in San Luis Obispo, CA. He enjoyed seeing his employees succeed and thrive in their personal lives. He had high standards and was exacting in his judgements, but he was fair, and he rewarded success.
John's annual golf tournament was a legendary good time where competitors became friends, and a community was fostered. For all the good times, there were some very hard times as well. In the times when John struggled to preserve his positive outlook, he never lost hope in his daughters, and he could always wax poetic about their talents and about the brightness of their futures. Even at the darkest of times, his girls were his light.
He is survived by his daughters, Carly Megan, Emily Grace, Bridget Hope and their mother; His parents Pat and Dottie, his siblings Kathryn and julienne, along with Chad, Lydia and Jacob Felix, Chad and Zackary Denton, as well as numerous friends, associates, and former employees who can keep his spirit alive by looking out for underdogs, easing the pain of the suffering, and by laughing as much as is humanly possible.

Oh! I forgot to say it before, but I also remember when we were in the third grade going on a field trip to Kaney Foods. We spent the day going thru the plant, then had hot dogs and chips with Kaney Foods stamped on the bags...

My deepest condolences and sympathy to the Kaney Family. I just learned about John passing. My heart goes out to his family.

My name is Marlo Thomas. I met John in the first grade at Sacred Heart School. I can remember the Kaney kids, Kathryn, John and Julie, all getting dropped off to school by their mom, in the big station wagon. Kathryn was in my Girl Scout Troop, where my mom was troop leader. It's funny to recollect so many memories of growing up.

Of course, I lost with John long ago, but he was always in my thoughts. Rest in peace sweet John. Until we meet again.
