John Michael “JK” Kensinger

May 11, 1948 – December 25, 2025

With love and deep gratitude for his life, we celebrate John Michael Kensinger, who passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, surrounded by many people who love him.

John was born on May 11, 1948, in Cullowhee, North Carolina. At five years old, he was welcomed into the loving home of Rev. David and Ruth Kensinger, who adopted him and gave him their name, stability, faith, and family. His parents served as missionaries with the Assemblies of God, spending many years doing ministry in Central America. They served in Nicaragua from 1941–1951 and then spent three decades in Costa Rica, establishing a Bible school and multiple churches. Their mission work also took them to Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Paraguay later in life. Growing up with parents who lived such extraordinary lives shaped John’s imagination and sense of the world. He loved talking about tropical places, loved to hear and share words in Spanish and French, and delighted in conversations that reminded him of the places his parents had served.

John spent his adult life surrounded by people who supported him, cared for him, and truly loved him. He lived boldly and colorfully. He was endlessly curious, imaginative, and full of personality. John loved drawing—especially his beloved Godzilla characters—and he proudly shared his artwork with those around him. His love for animals and creatures continued throughout life, even having an iguana named Godzuki, who meant so much to him.

Music was one of John’s greatest joys. His favorite songs included “Sussudio” by Phil Collins, “Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors, and “Get Back” by The Beatles. When music played, John didn’t just listen — he felt it. His whole body joined in, and his joy was contagious.

John loved being out in the community. Airports, museums, pet stores, Mexican restaurants, watching planes, teaching people about alligators, crocodiles and iguanas, and going on outings brought him happiness. He especially loved stopping by the Access office just to connect — to be seen, heard, noticed, and included. Those who truly knew John understood how much connection meant to him.

John was spirited, funny, stubborn, genuine, and unforgettable. He thrived with structure, patience, and people who truly took the time to know him. Those who did were rewarded with laughter, stories, and the privilege of knowing a man who lived bravely and unapologetically as himself.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. David and Ruth Kensinger. He leaves behind many caregivers, friends, and people whose lives were forever touched by knowing him. His spark, his music, his laughter, and his vibrant personality will never be forgotten.

A celebration of John’s life will be held Friday, January 9, 2026, at 4:00 PM, in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN. In honor of John, play a good song, enjoy a favorite meal, speak a word in another language, share a laugh, and remember the bright souls who make the world better simply by being who they are.
