John Ray Knapp

John Ray Knapp passed away on January 19, 2026, in Daleville, Virginia with his loving wife, Hilda Knapp and family members by his side. He was 94 years old.

Born on September 6, 1931, in Syracuse, New York, John lived a life marked by dedication to family, service to country, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. His early years in upstate New York nurtured a love of the outdoors and instilled a strong work ethic that shaped his path forward.

John earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the New York State College of Forestry in 1952. He later pursued further education, receiving an MBA from American International College in 1965. Following his undergraduate studies, he served as a carrier pilot in the United States Navy, demonstrating courage and commitment during a pivotal time in American history.

After his military service and graduate studies, John built a career rooted in engineering and business working at Texon, a manufacturer of material used in footwear, accessories, and function apparel. John worked in various manufacturing roles, culminating in his final role as Vice President of Global Manufacturing. He also kept up his love of flying through a long part time service in the Naval Reserves.

John found joy in simple pleasures, canoeing quiet waters, biking scenic trails, walking through nature, and spending meaningful time with family. These pursuits brought him peace and fulfillment throughout his life.

He shared 68 years of marriage with his wife, Hilda Knapp. Together they raised three sons: Thomas Knapp; Richard Knapp; and Kenneth Knapp, who preceded him in death. He also welcomed Jayne Knapp, wife to Thomas, into the family.

John's legacy continues through his grandchildren: Daniel Knapp and his wife Jillian Ruddock; Alexander Knapp and his wife Grace Segers; and through his great-granddaughter Caley Ruddock-Knapp.

John will be remembered with love and respect by those who knew him. His life stands as a testament to integrity, resilience, and devotion to family.
