John Knight Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2012.
Dr. John H. Knight, age 81, of Charlottesville, has been released from the fetters of time and material existence on Earth. On May 14, 2012, the seven year anniversary of his wife June's death, while surrounded by family and friends, he began his new life progression of eternal education and spiritual evolution leading to an eventual supernatural existence on Paradise. He is at once with those who have preceded him and those who will follow. Although born in Legionier, PA, he grew up in Charlottesville, graduating from Lane High School. His education at The University of Virginia was interrupted as he volunteered for active military duty during the Korean conflict. During this time of service he was fortunate to be trained as a Navy dental corpsman, which eventually led him to a future in dentistry. Upon returning to the school he loved so much, he graduated from the University of Virginia and subsequently attended the Medical College of Virginia where he received a Doctor of Dental Science and BMS degree in 1960. Good fortune and health allowed him to practice the profession he so loved for 52 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, Shenandoah Valley Dental Society, and was recognized as a Fellow of the Virginia Dental Association. He was a life member of the ADA, VDA, the UVA Alumni Association, and the Charlottesville Municipal Band. He was a charter member of the Thomas Jefferson Lions Club and the Torch Club in Charlottesville. He was a member of the Virginia Athletics Foundation, The Rotunda Society, and Farmington Country Club. Preceding him into celestial life were his grandparents, Rev. Henry Knight and Annie Shifflett of Greene County; George Hurd and Kate Calloway Hurd of Harrington, Delaware; his parents, Howard Knight and Iris Hurd Knight of Charlottesville; and his sisters, Faye Knight Kurz of Martinez, California, Jane Streetman and Kathryn Wright, both of Charlottesville; and other relatives, including Charlotte Pecora and Jack Dillard. He now joins his loving wife, June Dillard Knight, who began her spiritual journey on May 14, 2005. Memory of him remains in the hearts and minds of his children, John H. Knight, Jr., DDS and his fiancé Wanda Dunning, Colter Dillard Knight and Heather Rea Knight; his grandchildren, John H. Knight, III (Tre), Fairfax Knight, Truman Knight, Cheney Knight, and daughter-in-law, Christine Knight. He is survived by two loving and cherished sisters, Eva Lee Knight of Charlottesville and Iris Chisholm and her husband Bernie Chisholm of Trevillians. He loved and was loved by so many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He truly dedicated his life to his family, his profession, and dearly loved all of his patients and staff. The family would like to thank the dedicated team of caregivers including Hospice of the Piedmont, the staff at UVA CCU, and a special thanks to long-time family friend, Cubby Fox, for his years of friendship and Sharon Breeden for her loving care. A celebration of life officiated by Rev. Eddie Dean will be conducted Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 1:00pm at Maple Grove Christian Church on Proffit Road. A reception will immediately follow at the church.
