Church Point, LA: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Our Lady Of The Sacred Heart Catholic Church in church Point for Mr. John Kelly Lejeune, 79, who passed away at 5:20 PM Sunday, July 23 at his residence. Fr. Brian Harrington, Pastor of Our Lady Of The Sacred Heart Church will be the Celebrant of the Mass with burial immediately after in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Mausoleum on Hwy 35.
John Kelly, a native of Church Point and a current Lafayette, LA resident, was the son of the late Alva Lejeune and the former Elvina Henry. Mr. Lejeune started his career in business at Church Point Wholesale under Mr. Roy Horecky as a liquor salesman. In his many years in the liquor and grocery business, he was surrounded by many great friends in the industry. In the late 60's while still with Church Point Wholesale, he opened Kelly's Grocery and Market in a small location on Plaquemine Street which his beloved wife Betty ran. After many years in that location, he opened a new modern supermarket that stands in the same footprint today. Serving the Church Point community in several capacities throughout the years; he was an usher at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, a church board member, an Acadia-St. Landry Hospital Board member, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Jaycee's and Woodmen of the World. A man of deep faith, he attended the Retreat House in Grand Coteau for 52 consecutive years. With a "Need for Speed", he loved to ride his Harley Davidson. His wife, his children and his grandchildren were the center of his life; their sporting events were a priority. It did not matter when or where it was.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty M. Lejeune of Lafayette; one daughter, Monette Villien and husband Marc of Maurice, LA; one son, Scotty Lejeune and wife Alison of Church Point; eight grandchildren, Dylan Johnsey and wife Paige, Jacques Villien and wife Joella, Landon Johnsey and wife Taylor, Peyton, Ava, Chloe, Drew and Whitt Lejeune and four great-grandchildren: Zayla, Ezra and Archer Johnsey and Jane Lejeune. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herman Lejeune. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 25, from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM and continue on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until the time of services. A rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Lejeune's name to Our Lady of the Oaks Retreat House, 214 Church St, Grand Coteau, LA 70541 or Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503.
