Born Wednesday, August 22, 1945, in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late John David Lewis and Treva Eleanora Ritenour Lewis.
John was a 1963 graduate of North Hagerstown High School. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and worked at Fairchild before joining General Motors in Martinsburg, WV. John was a proud member of UAW Local 1590 and The Salvation Army. He enjoyed gardening, masonry work, fishing, and coaching at the National Little League. He also dedicated much of his time to volunteering with The Salvation Army and other community organizations, always willing to help anyone in need.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sandra D. Lewis; his children and their families: John Lewis and Tiffany - children Christopher and Nicholas Lewis, with their families: Christopher and Holly, with great-grandchildren Carson and Caiden, and Nicholas and Ryann, with great-grandchildren Lyla and Liam. Shelby Lewis Gewinner and Vince, and their children, Zach Gewinner and Cassie, with great-grandchild Scarlett Gewinner, and Wyatt Gewinner and Jessica, with great-grandchildren Louis and Jack Gewinner, all residing in Nebraska. Michael Lewis and his children, Connor and Brennan Lewis. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon Whipp and husband, Charles, and Nancy Lewis Ridenour, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Vada Lewis Blevins, Peggy Lewis Roser, and Judy Lewis Dawson.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, with Pastor Mark Van Meter officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army of Hagerstown Corps.
