Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center - ChambersburgJohn G. Lightner, Jr., 80, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Monday, February 16, 2026 in the WellSpan York Hospital. Born September 3, 1945 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John G. Lightner, Sr. and Rosalie (Reisher) Lightner.
He served with the United States Army Company C 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry Bridgend during Vietnam from December 15, 1965 until his honorable discharge October 4, 1967. During his time in the service he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart Medal. John was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Chambersburg. He retired in 2001 after 30 years of service.
John enjoyed golfing and was an avid Green Bay Packers football fan. He was a member of the VFW Post 1599, American Legion Post 46, AMVETS Post 224, Elks Club 600, and the Chambersburg Club.
John is survived by his daughter, Tonya Walton and her husband Josh of York, PA; three grandsons, Hunter, Chase, and Devin; a great-grandson, Kade; a sister, and Donna Marasco of McKeesport, PA; three nieces, three nephews, two great-nieces; four great-nephews; one great-great nephew; and his companion, Cheryl Walters and her family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters, Zita Wagaman, Sondra Laird and Gladys Holobinko.
Services will be held 12:00 PM, Wednesday, February 25, 2026 in the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 with Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg where military honors will be conducted be members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 honor guard.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Wednesday afternoon in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
