I was transferred from St. Louis to Hartford In September of 1980 by the May Department Stores Corporation to their G. Fox division. I met Jack and understood that he was greeting me as another know it all, wet behind the ears, corporate MBA, that of course, he would have to "break in". And he surely did! I learned more Accounting, and practical real world business from Jack than I ever did in schools. In some ways, Jack became a father figure, as well as a teacher. We worked through challenging times at G. Fox together and his guidance and support was immeasurable! Many an evening, during month end accounting close, we would be stumped to explain gross margin declines we had not forecast. Jack would smile, rub that bald head above those bushy eyebrows and somehow we would figure it out!
Once, we went deep sea fishing one summer off the coast of Rhode Island. In rough seas, while I "chummed", wishing I was gone, Jack crabbed across the deck with fishing rod in one hand and a beer in the other! His smoked blue fish were outstanding as were his stories of adventure!
We moved on in 1984. I believe I attended his retirement party in 1987 and perhaps in later years. Jack was my mentor, he was a good friend, one of the very Best! RIP, Jack.
