John Charles Longwell of Herkimer, NY, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2023, at ST. Luke's hospital with his loving family at his side.
John was born March 6, 1951 in Endicott, NY to the late James and Dorothy (Gotham) Longwell. He was raised in Elmira, Lowville, and graduated from New Hartford High School in June of 1969. He attended Mohawk Valley Community College and SUNY Poly Tech. John served many years as a Quality Control Engineer at General Electric in Schenectady and on French Road in Utica.
John was united in marriage to Carol Gibbs on June 8, 1974. They enjoyed a beloved union of 49 years before his passing. He is survived by his wife and their two children, son Charles and wife Tonia, of Little Falls, NY, and daughter Sherri Pearson and husband Joseph of Wesley Chapel, Fl. Six grandchildren, James, and Dylan Longwell: Joseph ll, Whitney, Alexander, and Abigail Pearson, and two great grandchildren, Amya and Evelyn Pearson, his sister Donna O'Connor and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John had a great love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, taking canoe trips and camping with his family. Some of his favorite hobbies included building canoes, working on computers, working on cars and also an avid reader.
John was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer. John enjoyed the brotherhood of the Masonic bodies. He was a member of the Olive Branch Lodge No. 40 F&AM, Ilion, Royal Arch and a 32 Degree Mason of the Knights Templar.
The family will be present on May 13, 2023 to receive friends and relatives at the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer from 1:00 – 2:00 pm followed by a Celebration of John's life at 2:00 in the Sanctuary. Interment will be immediately after the service at the Goodier Cemetery in Cedar Lake.
