John Salazar Lucio

John Salazar Lucio, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend died in Austin on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 after a prolonged illness. He was born May 16, 1937 in Austin, TX to Cristobal G. and Guadalupe Salazar Lucio. He was preceded in death by his parents Cristobal and Guadalupe Lucio, as well as by his sister Beatrice Rios, and brothers Morris Lucio and Celestino Lucio. John is survived by his daughter, Joni (Ramiro) Guerrero (Laura, Clarissa & Geoffrey) of Austin, TX; his two sons, John R. (Cecilia) Lucio (Ann-Marie, Monique, Jonathan, Ryanna, & Mia) of Cedar Park, TX; and Bryant Lucio (Brooke Elizabeth) of Waco, TX; 3 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Mary Frisco of Virginia, Lupe Salinas of Austin, TX, Linda Villegas of Austin, TX, Susie Marsh of Austin, TX; a brother, Chris Lucio of Fort Worth; TX, former wife and friend, Brenda Hamm as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was a "bigger than life" person who loved going to Texas Rangers Baseball games, fishing, eating breakfast with his buddies, and attending Austin High Maroon school reunions (Class of '56). Football was his sport, and he especially enjoyed watching the University of Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys as well as saying his infamous quote "how bout them cowboys". In his youth, John was an exceptional 3-sport letterman athlete in football, basketball and baseball at Austin High School. After graduating in 1956, John joined the US Air Force where he selected and embarked on a life-long career as an Engineer Draftsman. While stationed in Okinawa, John continued to play basketball in the service's league. Ever the consummate athlete, once John returned to Austin, he joined and played with a semi-pro baseball team called "The Austin Jokers," (62-64). John also started his career as an Engineer draftsman at Camp Mabry in 1964 after leaving the service, and where he continued to work for the next 25 years until his retirement in 1992. Both John's wit and sarcasm were his unforgettable trademarks but so was his devotion to his children, grandchildren, parents, siblings and friends and will be forever missed. Pallbearers: Geoff Guerrero (grandson), Jonathan Lucio (grandson), Rudy Sustaita (nephew), John David Flores Jr. (great-nephew), Frank Cortez (friend) Honorary Pallbearer: Anthony Cortez Austin Hassell (great-nephew) Visitation 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home Chapel 2620 South Congress, Austin, TX with Recitation of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass celebrated at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Austin Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Brookdale Beckett Meadows & Brookdale Hospice Staff for their loving care and kindness to John. The family would also encourage anyone who would like to honor John's memory to consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or to any Hospice organization.
