John Lucio Obituary

Published by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home South on Feb. 28, 2018.
John Salazar Lucio, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend died in Austin on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 after a prolonged illness. He was born May 16, 1937 in Austin, TX to Cristobal G. and Guadalupe Salazar Lucio. He was preceded in death by his parents Cristobal and Guadalupe Lucio, as well as by his sister Beatrice Rios, and brothers Morris Lucio and Celestino Lucio. John is survived by his daughter, Joni (Ramiro) Guerrero (Laura, Clarissa & Geoffrey) of Austin, TX; his two sons, John R. (Cecilia) Lucio (Ann-Marie, Monique, Jonathan, Ryanna, & Mia) of Cedar Park, TX; and Bryant Lucio (Brooke Elizabeth) of Waco, TX; 3 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Mary Frisco of Virginia, Lupe Salinas of Austin, TX, Linda Villegas of Austin, TX, Susie Marsh of Austin, TX; a brother, Chris Lucio of Fort Worth; TX, former wife and friend, Brenda Hamm as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was a "bigger than life" person who loved going to Texas Rangers Baseball games, fishing, eating breakfast with his buddies, and attending Austin High Maroon school reunions (Class of '56). Football was his sport, and he especially enjoyed watching the University of Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys as well as saying his infamous quote "how bout them cowboys". In his youth, John was an exceptional 3-sport letterman athlete in football, basketball and baseball at Austin High School. After graduating in 1956, John joined the US Air Force where he selected and embarked on a life-long career as an Engineer Draftsman. While stationed in Okinawa, John continued to play basketball in the service's league. Ever the consummate athlete, once John returned to Austin, he joined and played with a semi-pro baseball team called "The Austin Jokers," (62-64). John also started his career as an Engineer draftsman at Camp Mabry in 1964 after leaving the service, and where he continued to work for the next 25 years until his retirement in 1992. Both John's wit and sarcasm were his unforgettable trademarks but so was his devotion to his children, grandchildren, parents, siblings and friends and will be forever missed. Pallbearers: Geoff Guerrero (grandson), Jonathan Lucio (grandson), Rudy Sustaita (nephew), John David Flores Jr. (great-nephew), Frank Cortez (friend) Honorary Pallbearer: Anthony Cortez Austin Hassell (great-nephew) Visitation 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home Chapel 2620 South Congress, Austin, TX with Recitation of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7:00 pm. Tony Gonzales called from out of town, unable to attend the service & he is the person that alerted us to Johnny's passing. He sends his condolences and called the family at the funeral home yesterday but he wants to express the gratitude he had for his friendship with John since the high school days. Always remembered him as a very good friend, enjoyed his company and will cherish the days they played together as young kids in the neighborhood. A really good fellow to all, that is his legacy besides the love he had for his kids. RIP

Uncle John: I will always remember you as my good looking uncle, who I always thought resembled, The man in Black, Johnny Cash! Your personality was bigger than life. I always enjoyed running into you at the Longhorn basketball games. You are now celebrating in heaven , and I believe my beautiful mother(your baby sister) had a big hug waiting for you. You will be missed. Joni, John and Bryant you all will be in my prayers.

To my Dear Friend , Neighbor , & as close to a brother that I could ever have. I'm going to miss the times we had going back to 1980 when I moved to Austin for school . You were my 1st friend that I met when I moved here & remained that thru out the years . I am forever grateful for times we had during most Cowboy's & Longhorn's sporting events. You remain a fixture in my son's memory & he certainly has felt this loss as well. You have inspired me to be a good father, grandfather , & mostly a good friend. You will be missed . Thank you for all the great times ! God bless , Cortez Family

I will always remember Johnny and Mary Lucio as two of my favorite AHS graduates. Johnny always had a smile on this face and a welcoming comment for everyone. I know his family will always be grateful for the wisdom, humor, and kindness he left for them to remember.

Joni, I know that you, John and Bryant are missing your father greatly. He was a good man, a great father and friend to us all. He had a good wit, a great laugh, could be sarcastic but in a good, constructive way. He never judged, always treated me fairly and Missy, Kim and Angela always liked to be around him. Ya'll will always have those wonderful memories of him, pictures to look at, stories to tell so in that way he will be you always. God speed on his journey and even though he probably didn't want to leave this life he is facing an incredible family reunion in heaven! Love you all, peace be with you.

John, I am so darn sad that you are gone. I am going to miss you immensely! I already do. I'm going to miss buying you movies, especially of your favorite actor Randolph Scott. I have so many memories of us together and of gatherings with family. I will miss all those Saturday's you would come over to my house to watch football, baseball, the Spurs and eat my chili and make me laugh. We would watch movie after movie. You would always scare me when it was a suspenseful movie or you would ruin the movie for me because you had the movie figured out before it even ended! Just like Mack Brown's plays. You called them before he did! We made an entire day out of it John, and I would always send you home with leftovers so you could have them while you watched the Cowboys play the next day. There never was a dull moment when you were around, John!

Thank you, John for being a good big brother and a wonderful uncle to Lindsay. For taking her to UT games and watching the Cowboys practice at St. Ed's. Thanks for taking me out to eat and then saying you had to take out a "bank loan" whenever you took me out to eat. Thanks too for teaching me about sports, especially Rangers baseball. So many memories I have of us and when I think of them I get sad. Like when I was in junior high and you bought me my first Webster's Pocketbook Dictionary. About how adamant you were about clean cars. You were the only one I would allow to pick on me for your pure enjoyment. Even though there was a 15-year age difference between us, we still had a lot in common. John, I wish I could have just one more day of you and I spending a Saturday together and spending Thanksgiving at Joni's. Just one more day!

See you later, big brother and know that you are loved and missed so much.
