John Lugar Obituary

URBANA - John Raymond Lugar, 84 of Urbana, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025 in his home.

John was born on June 25, 1941 in Urbana, Ohio, to the late Bert Lugar and Dorothy (Nichols) Grow.

John lived a life marked by hard work, pride, and devotion. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1966, a chapter of his life he carried with deep honor. Following his service, he began a long and rewarding career with Navistar, where he dedicated many years before his retirement.

On Oct. 16, 1962, John married the love of his life, Choung Lugar. Together they built a warm and loving home, sharing countless memories and creating a life centered around family and friends.

In his younger years, John practiced Karate and earned his black belt, an achievement that reflected his discipline and determination. John also found joy in the outdoors, especially when fishing, and he had a special gift for woodworking. His walking sticks, canes, and figurines were crafted with patience and care, each piece a reflection of his creativity. Another favorite pastime of his was carefully inspecting coins in search of rare errors and unique pieces.

He was a proud member of the FOE Harmony Lodge #8 F.& A.M., where he achieved the honor of Scottish Rite 32nd Degree. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge #1215 and the Amvets, where he valued fellowship and community. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his loved ones, who will remember him for his kindness, dedication, and the love he shared so freely.

John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Choung H. Lugar; daughter, Chan (BJ) Foulk of Columbus; very close nephew, Adam (Maggie) Hong of Columbus; brother, Pong S. Hong of Urbana; sisters, Pam (Barry) Arehart of Xenia, Fredda (Mark) Westfall of Woodstock; Kathy (Gene) Helms of Urbana; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Jean Lugar; parents; and brothers, Phillip Grow, Timothy Grow, Joseph Grow, and Keith Lugar.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio. Masonic Honors will be performed by Harmony Lodge #8 F. & A.M. at 10:30 a.m.

Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Jeremy Spence officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and American Legion Post #120 beginning at 1 p.m.
