John Stuart Macdonald ("Stuart"), 80, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from natural causes. Born on August 14, 1945, in Santa Maria, California, Stuart lived a life defined by devotion to family, quiet strength, and selfless service.
He proudly served his country as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War and continued his military career for a total of 20 years, exemplifying honor, discipline, and commitment. After his service, Stuart dedicated himself wholeheartedly to being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Soft-spoken and steady, he was always there whether you needed him or not. From cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events to dropping everything to help a family member with even the smallest task, Stuart's life was one of quiet generosity and unwavering love. A gentle soul and lifelong animal lover, he cared deeply for the pets and creatures that brought joy and comfort to his family's life. He was also an avid golfer. If he wasn't inside with his family, he was outside hitting golf balls, enjoying the game and the outdoors he loved so much.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Irene Harter Simpson and James Duncan Macdonald and his step-father Stuart Charles Simpson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Gloria Harrell Macdonald; his sons, Ryan Macdonald and Bradley Macdonald; and his six grandchildren: Isabelle, John Ryan, Lori Kate, Sarah Carr, Caroline, and Colin Macdonald; his brother, James Duncan Macdonald; and his step-sister, Mary Stuart Orbe. Stuart was deeply cherished and will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His family finds comfort in knowing he is smiling down on them.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Greater Savannah.
