John A. Mackey
February 21, 1930-January 18, 2023
John Mackey, 92, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Wednesday January 18, 2023 at Miller's Merry Manor in Portage, IN.
He was born February 21, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William Mackey and Yvonne (Tataryn) Mackey.
On June 4, 1955, in Chicago, John married Maryan Mackowiak. Together they enjoyed water skiing, bowling, motorcycle riding and raising 5 children. They moved to this area 20 years ago from Alsip, IL. John, who was a baptized and confirmed catholic, worked as a truck driver for most of his career, taking some time in between to open Johnny's Auto Repair and try his hand as a mechanic. He was a Teamster and retired from Preston Trucking 151. John was a member of the Lions Club of Alsip, loved playing cards and enjoyed fishing and playing pool.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Maryan; son, Jay (Janessa) Mackey of Michigan City, IN; four daughters, Debra Fumi of Naples, FL; Jo-Ann (Dan) Mott of Peotone, IL, Maryan "Missy" Daley of Haysville, KS, Patricia (Joseph) McGuire of New Lennox, IL; seven grandchildren, Justin, Brandon, Eddie, Michael, Lindsey, Kaitlyn, Meghan and 5 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William and Patrick Mackey.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. Cremation will take place. No services are planned at this time.
Memorial contributions may be made in John's honor to the National Federation of the Blind at nfb.org or the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org.
