John M. Maksymczuk

1946 - 2026

John Michael Maksymczuk, 79, entered into heaven on January 7, 2026, reuniting with the love of his life, Carole.

John was born in Rome on May 25, 1946, to the late Alex and Mary Michaniw Maksymczuk, and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1964. He began his career at Revere Copper and Brass until enlisting in the United States Navy on March 1, 1964, and was a DJ while stationed in Navsta Argentina, New Foundland. He was honorably discharged after three years, earning the rank of E-3. John returned home and resumed working at Revere where he completed the Electrical Apprentice Program. As an electrician John also worked for Miller Brewing Company, Bartell Machinery, and retired from Griffiss Air Force Base. On July 25, 1970, he was united in marriage to the former Carole May Flanders; a blessed union over 54 years until her passing on October 24, 2024.

John was an avid hunter which took him on many adventures in and around Lee Center with his lifelong friend, Dave Vernold. There were also many cross-country road trips with Paul Gatley to hunt in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, and New Foundland. But nothing made John smile more than being on his John Deere tractor mowing the lawn, grilling, and enjoying some relaxation after a busy workday. Most of all he cherished his wife of 54 years, Carole, and was happiest at home entertaining family and friends.

John was a proud Life Member of the Lee Legion, Post 1794, Point Rock Fish and Game Club, The Elks Club, and a member and volunteer with the Roman Runners.

John is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Jim Salmon; sister-in-law, Cyndi Flanders; brothers-in-law, Robert (Kathy) Flanders and Steve (Jacque) Flanders; and his beloved niece and nephew, Mary Beth (Clayton) Bartholme; and nephews, Adrian Flanders, Robert Flanders, James (Christine) Flanders, Eric (Marley) Flanders, and Aubrey Flanders. John was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Alex "Sonny" and Patricia (Flynn) Maksymczuk, and nephew, Christopher Flanders.

The family would like to extend a very heartfelt and special thank you to Cyndi Flanders and Paul Gatley for all of their love, compassion, and helpful deeds in caring for John.

John's Celebration of Life with military honors will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 12:00 NOON, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome, NY (315) 337-0055. Spring burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 10:00AM - 12:00 NOON, prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis TN 38105-9959 and/or a charity of one's choice.

Final arrangements have been entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, Nick Iselo, Marty Ciaccia and Kevin Barry, Funeral Directors.
