John Mattes

John Paul Mattes, 56, of Columbia City, passed away on July 9, 2021, at Parkview Hospital. Born in Fort Wayne on October 11, 1964, to the late James and Helen (Pogozelski) Mattes. He spent his formative years in Allen County, graduating from Heritage High School in 1983. As he continued to grow in his career, he received a degree from Ivy Tech and two from Purdue University Fort Wayne. John was married to Julie Reed at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Uniondale, on April 24, 1993. He was a loving father to Jacob, Josh, and Jessica and was so happy to have Jocelyn and Cortney a part of the family He worked at AdapTek Systems from 1992-2009. In 2010 he started work at Fort Wayne Metals as an Associate Engineer. John was a man of great faith. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake TWP. He served as a past Council President and on the Stephens Ministry. He was also on the Building Committee, New Song Steering Committee and the Back 2 Africa Team. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping, hiking, traveling, walking on the beach and working on muscle cars. John is survived by his wife of 28 years, Julie Mattes; two sons, Jacob (Jocelyn) Mattes and Joshua (Cortney Magers) Mattes; his daughter, Jessica Mattes; his father and mother-in-law, John and Joyce Reed; his four brothers, Edward Mattes, Walter (Jyl) Mattes, Michael (Donna) Mattes and Robert (Tina) Mattes; his nieces and nephews, Joseph (Kelly) Mattes, Raymond Mattes, Megan (Damian) Hayes, Nicholas Mattes, Tiffany (Nicholas) Munro, and Robert (Margaret) Esquivel; two great-nephews and a great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake Township on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. with calling one hour prior to the service. The family will also receive friends at the church, on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. The burial will take place at Eel River Cemetery, Churubusco.
