John Joseph McCarthy

John Joseph McCarthy, age 92, of Stoneham, died peacefully Saturday, January 5, 2019, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. Born in Saugus on February 20, 1926 he was the son of the late John and Frances H. (Kelly) McCarthy and husband of the late Isabel F. McCarthy. John McCarthy was raised in Saugus and was a graduate of Saugus High School. After completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country. John was a retired plumbing engineer and had worked for Knoll Contracting in Needham and McCarthy Mechanical in Stoneham. He was also a member of the Mass Builders Conference. He had been a Stoneham resident since 1956, was a devoted parishioner of St. Patrick's Church, where he was a member of both the Holy Name Society and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. John was the beloved father of Isabel Szczawinski and her husband, Donald, of Tewksbury, Michael McCarthy of Dover, NH, Jean Fowler and her husband, Jim, of Stoneham, Patty McCarthy and Bob Meader, of Bradford, Jimmy McCarthy and his wife, Mary Jo, of Middleton, Kathleen Lukens and her husband, John, of Reading, and his late son, John McCarthy and his wife, Maryanna. He was the brother of Evelyn Carbone and Christine Donahue, both of Saugus, and the late Edward McCarthy, James, Joe, Tommy, Frankie, Eileen Howlett and Mary McCannon. He was the loving Grampy and Great Grampy of 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. John's funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Friday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-8pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, it was John's wish that you take an old friend out to lunch.
