John J. McCaughey, Jr., age 81, of Vernon Hills, IL, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024 in Long Grove, IL.
John was born on March 31, 1943 in Waukegan to John J. McCaughey, Sr. and Elaine Carlson McCaughey. He was raised in Gurnee and graduated from Warren Township High School.
At the age of 18 John became a volunteer firefighter for the Gurnee Fire Department. He later took a position with the Lake Forest Fire Department where he retired as Assistant Chief in 1981. John also worked as a skilled plumber for V.J. Killian Co. in Lake Forest.
John and Nancy moved from Lake Bluff to Apache Junction, Arizona, where they enjoyed spending retirement time together in the warm climate. They were very active in the community where they volunteered and John enjoyed playing in the softball league.
John is survived by children Dorie (Don) Hoevel of Wauconda, IL, Julie (Earl) Hurter of Des Plaines, IL and Steve (Kerry) McCaughey of Wadsworth, IL; grandchildren Zachary Hoevel; Colin, Kevin (Nicole) and Billy (Liz) Knesley, Tito Houlston; Christian, Kaitlyn and Braeden McCaughey; great grandchildren Fiona, McKenna, Owen and Cody Knesley. Sisters Mary (Stephen) Furrer of Waukegan, IL, and Betty (Elmer) Fallos of Wadsworth, IL; step children Kari (Kent) Volpe of Libertyville, IL, Kelli (Rob) Johns of Green Oaks, IL and Fitz (Cristl) Dunn of Lake Bluff, IL; step grandchildren Brian (Brooke), Kevin (Colleen) and Scott (Ashley Desando) Johns and Elsabeth Dunn; step great grandchild Jordan Johns. John had many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Peddle Dunn McCaughey (2023); parents John J. McCaughey, Sr. and Elaine Carlson McCaughey; sister Anne McCaughey; in-laws Ron & Edith Peddle and Barbara A. Peddle.
Interment will be private.

I was able to play softball with John for quite a few years in Arizona. Enjoyed the times with John and Nancy.
