John McGahey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fischer Funeral Care & Cremation Services on Jan. 24, 2026.
John Alan McGahey and his twin sister Susie were born in High Point, North Carolina on July 12, 1938, to parents Charles Swanson McGahey and Hazel Isabelle McGahey (ne Shedd), formerly of Indianapolis, Indiana. John's father, Charles, was a chemical engineer in the High Point furniture industry.
After graduating from High Point High School, John attended North Carolina State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He pledged the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and remained in contact with his fraternity brothers throughout his life.
John's degree in Chemical Engineering led him to a long sales career in the processed chemicals industry with a number of companies, including Hercules, Georgia Pacific, Vinings, and Chem Products.
In 1977 John met Glenna Rickborn McCoy, a young widow living in Greenville, South Carolina. They were married later that year and blended their families, resulting in 3 children – and eventually 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Second only to his family, John's great love was sports, and he loved them all, especially football and golf.
John adored his children and grandchildren and attended countless recitals, tennis matches, cheerleading events, baseball games, and musicals - always cheering them on. He loved to travel with his extended family and enjoyed many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and many U.S. beaches.
John McGahey was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Hazel McGahey, as well as his two sisters, SuAnn McGahey Snead and Nancy Jane McGahey Galbavy.
He is survived by his wife Glenna Rickborn McGahey and their three children, James Todd McGahey (Caroline), Amy McGahey Fletcher (Chad), and Alyson McCoy Hart (Paul). He is also survived by seven grandchildren – Ava McGahey Zurcher (Brent), Dorothy Britt McGahey, John Adair Fletcher, William Alan Fletcher, and Doris Wyatt Hart, William McCoy Hart, and Owen Daniel Hart – 2 great-grandchildren, Lanier Jane Zurcher and Lewis Robert Zurcher – and many nieces and nephews.
John's family is incredibly grateful for so many friends, family and neighbors who made the time to visit him during his long illness. They are also especially grateful to Lotus Blossom Hospice and his primary caregiver Janet Concepcion. We love you all very much.
A Celebration of the Life of John Alan McGahey will be announced at a later date.
