John J. McGee, 81, passed away Monday, January 12, 2026, in Scarborough, ME at the Maine Veteran's Home.

John was born in Orange, California on September 16, 1944, a son of Roger and Mary McGee. John grew up in Portland and was an altar boy at St. Joseph's Church in his youth. He was educated in Catholic schools his entire life, and he graduated from Cheverus High School in 1963. After high school, John attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970.

John married Joyce Peck in 1967, and they went on to have four daughters.

John worked at the Maine Job Service for the Department of Labor for 42 years as an employment specialist and veteran's counselor. He was proud to have spent his entire career helping people enrich their lives.

Spending time in the great outdoors was one of John's greatest joys. He was a gardening expert and enjoyed working in both his flower and vegetable gardens. John hunted with his father and brother in his younger years and was delighted to be able to pass the tradition on by teaching his grandson to hunt.

John was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Robert and David.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Peck McGee, his daughters Kimberly Sheehan and her husband Robert, Jane Nunan and her husband David, Mary McGee, and Elizabeth Capdevielle and her husband Jason. John had seven grandchildren: Joshua and Zachary Sheehan, Audrey and Ethan Nunan, and Andrew, Alyson, and Audrina Capdevielle and two great- grandchildren, Brantley Sheehan and Parker Sheehan. He is also survived by his sisters Jean Joy of Florida, Alice Davis of Saco, Susan Stano of Springfield, MA, his brother Peter McGee of Saco and many nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Calling Hours will take place from 4PM-7PM Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, Saco. A Funeral Mass will take place at 11AM Friday, January 16, 2026 at Most Holy Trinity, Saco, with a Graveside Service to follow at Southern Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Springvale.
