John Mcmahon Obituary

Age 93, died January 11, 2005 at the Appleton Medical Center. He was born March 3, 1911 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia. John completed his BA degree at Haverford College Pennsylvania in 1933 where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Master of Arts degree in German two years later from the University of Pennsylvania. He also attended the University of Bonn Germany before the war where he met his future wife, Virginia L. Stockhausen, who was also studying in Germany at that time. She preceded John in death in 1989. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the European Theatre. Following his military service, he completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York. John taught German at Beloit College in Wisconsin from 1946 to 1947 and then at Lawrence College in Appleton from 1947 until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Appleton as well as numerous professional organizations. He and his wife were both active over years with the Appleton Public Library. He is survived by his daughter: Kathryn K. McMahon of Havertown, Pennsylvania and by his sister: Helen D. McMahon of Palm Harbor, Florida. John was preceded in death by his parents, and by his wife Virginia. Memorial services for John will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 803 E. College Avenue in Appleton. Friends may gather at the church on Saturday from 1:30 PM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that those who wish may send memorial gifts to the John F.
