John Edward Mikeska

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Edward Mikeska, who left us peacefully at his home in Bryan, Texas, on July 10, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 25, 1938, in Tunis, Texas, John lived a life rich with love, laughter, and cherished memories that will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

As we gather to celebrate his life, we invite friends and family to join in remembrance. Visitation will be held at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, Texas, on July 17, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 AM and a burial at New Tabor Cemetery at 11:15 AM.

A proud graduate of Texas A&M University in 1966, John dedicated his early years to enriching his education after completing high school at Stephen F. Austin. Alongside his academic pursuits, John served honorably in the Army Reserve from 1961 to 1967. His commitment to learning, as well as his supportive nature, led him to become a math tutor, sharing knowledge and encouraging countless others.

John worked at Weingarten’s for 28 years, and for part of that time, he was the produce manager. He also worked 15 years for the Food Service Department of Texas A&M University, first as an assistant buyer and later as the Warehouse Manager.

John’s dedication extended beyond education, military service and his career; he was an active member of the Cooks Point Brethren Church, and Faith UCC Church where he found joy in helping the younger generation and welcoming all into the fold of the community. Currently, John and Shirley were members of Bryan Community Church. He was known for his warm spirit, always ready with a smile or a helping hand.

Family meant everything to John, and he was deeply proud of his enduring marriage to his beloved wife Shirley Mikeska, with whom he celebrated a remarkable 64 years. Together, they built a family filled with love and adventure. He is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Mikeska, their son, Nathan Mikeska (Ginger); daughter, Susan Ward (John); sister-in-law, Clara Daniels Orbeck; and a treasured array of grandchildren: Hannah (Jonathan) Missel, Jordan (Bryan) Brennan, and Lauren Mikeska. His legacy also lives on through his great-grandchildren, Paxton, Caleb, and Tyler Missel, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and the cherished members of his church family and friends.

John had a zest for life that was beautifully complemented by his love for travel to Europe, fishing, and the joyous rhythm of polka music, often seen dancing with delight whenever a tune played. These simple joys filled his life with happiness and laughter, and his stories of adventures will forever echo in the hearts of those who shared in them.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents William and Theresa Mikeska, three sisters, Frances (Elias) Urbanosky, Doris (Tom) Ryan, Willie Mae Currey (Hal), as well as his nephew Richard Ryan, niece Melinda Currey, and his in-laws Clarence and Annie Daniels.

John Edward Mikeska lived a life filled with purpose, kindness, and love, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will forever dance within our hearts.
