Schmidt Funeral Home - BellvilleDerry Jerry Mikeska, born on August 1, 1936, in Bellville, Texas, passed away peacefully in his hometown on August 11, 2025, at the age of 89. A beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his family was his greatest love. He was also a dedicated teacher and cherished community member. He found his greatest contentment and joy in family and nature. Whether spending time with family, patiently casting a line in a lake, river, or creek, going on a hunt in the crisp morning air, or nurturing vibrant life in his beloved garden, these were his happiest moments.
Growing up in the Oak Hill community and later Bellville, Derry’s early years shaped the values he carried throughout his life. After graduating from Bellville High School, he pursued his higher education with a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University, equipping him with the knowledge that would serve him well in his teaching career. Derry was deeply committed to his role as an educator, inspiring countless students throughout his tenure.
On April 5, 1958, Derry married Dorothy Lynn, who has remained a constant source of love and support throughout their years together. Together, they raised three daughters: Sherry Noack (Richard) of Bellville, Sharlon Minshew (Clay) of Sweeny, and Gina Springer (Howard) of Hempstead. Derry was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Cord Noack (Holly), Chad Noack, Derek Roch (Austin), Cole Roch (Kari), Cody Springer, and Kylie Springer. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Gracie Roch, Avery Roch, and Levi Roch.
Derry's hobbies and interests included gardening, hunting, fishing, taxidermy, and cooking, all of which reflected his love for nature and the outdoors, as well as his desire to share these passions with his family and friends. His warm and welcoming spirit will be deeply missed by the numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends whose lives he touched.
Derry Mikeska is preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Esther (Kamas) Mikeska, as well as his sister Dottie Helwig and brothers Dalby Mikeska and Denny Mikeska.
A Funeral Service to honor Derry's life will be held on August 14, 2025, at Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville, Texas, beginning at 10:00 AM. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Nelsonville.
