Obituary

John's Obituary

John Quincy Murdock Sr. was born on December 17, 1943, in Dalark, Arkansas to the late Herbert Murdock Sr. and Selma Quarles Murdock, who both preceded him in death. He peacefully departed this life on July 1, 2025.

John and his family moved to Malvern Arkansas in 1951. He attended Wilson High School. During the Great Migration from the south, he moved to Chicago Illinois in search of better job opportunities. There, he married Christine Adams Murdock, and together they were blessed with four children. Later in life, he welcomed two additional daughters.

After moving to Chicago, John found work with the Chicago Transit Authority. He later built a successful career as an electronics repairman specializing in jukeboxes and arcade machines, working for Dearborn Music. He traveled throughout the city—into every neighborhood, good and bad—servicing machines and forging connections. He quickly became affectionately known as “The Jukebox Man.”

John had a heart for children and a gift for making each encounter special. Whether taking his own children and their friends to iconic Chicago events or bringing neighborhood kids along on service calls to teach them skills. He always made time to uplift and encourage. He was a kind, generous, and compassionate man with a heart of gold.

He was preceded in death by his brother Laurence Murdock Sr. and his sister, Mildred Dangerfield.

He leaves to cherish his children: Yvonne English of Joliet Illinois, Linda Murdock, John Q Murdock Jr, Tracey Murdock, Joyce Burnett of Chicago Illinois and Zenekia Buckhanan of Plainfield Illinois; three siblings: Dorothy Murdock Smith of Los Angeles, California, Joyce Murdock Hogan and Herbert Murdock Jr of Malvern Arkansas; One Sister-in Law: Joycelyn Murdock of Chicago, Illinois. John’s legacy continues through a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life.

John also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

When you live a life filled with love, purpose, and service, your legacy becomes a lasting imprint. John Quincy Murdock Sr.— genuine, humble, and unforgettable.

John's Homegoing Celebration will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Malvern. A public viewing will take place at the church prior to the service, from 11:00 to 12:00 P.M. He will be laid to rest at Perla Cemetery in Malvern. You may sign John's online guestbook below.
