John Nevius Obituary

Published by Gillies Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Lynden on Jul. 18, 2013.
Dr. John Richard Nevius, Jr. March 19, 1928 – July 18, 2013 Teacher, mountaineer, principal, professor, soldier, and devoted husband. Universally loved and admired. He passed peacefully, surrounded by family and friends after a decade-long battle with Parkinson's. He devoted his life to teaching and to teachers. His life's work was raising children who could make good, moral decisions taught by teachers who could teach well. First, as a teacher himself and then as a teacher of teachers. He trained 2 generations of educators in Lubbock, Texas and was awarded the professor of the year at Texas Tech University. He served as interim Dean of the College of Education. He taught Sunday School for many years in addition to teaching professionally. He was an avid mountaineer summiting many of the Cascades, Canadian Rockies, the Swiss Alps and unnamed peaks on expedition in Afghanistan. He served in the United States Army on the DMZ between North and South Korea in the run-up to the Korean War. A devoted family man, he retired in Lynden to be close to his wife's family. Survived by his wife, Kathleen; his son, Peter, daughter-in-law Susan, grandchildren Nicolas and Catherine and sister, Muriel. Services will be held Saturday, July 27, 1 pm at Sonlight Church in Lynden. Based on his wishes, he will have his ashes spread in the Sierra Nevada. Donations in his name may be made to The Salvation Army or the Sierra Club.

Is this the precious Jack Nevius I knew for so many years at Hollywood Presbyterian Church? I hope so. You gave us an electric tea kettle for a wedding present in 1954! I remember it well and used it for so many years. I knew you well, and then my husband Paul and his brother Keith. Thank you for being such a loving friend. Nancy Stevens Wegeman
