John Neal Oblad, age 78, passed away on February 27, 2024 in Taylorsville Utah. John was born June 6, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Seymour and Elizabeth Borgquist Oblad.
Following High school, John served an LDS mission to upstate New York and participated in the Hill Cumorah Pageant. He later attended BYU, earning a bachelor's degree in 1972. By that time, John and Cathy were parents of three little ones. Grandpa worked in many professional kitchens and restaurant management over the years. He also taught food service at the technical college in Richfield, Utah. While easing into retirement, John worked for UTA, driving busses.
Shortly after getting married to Sue Ann Julian on December 24, 2000, he and Sue Ann served a mission to Brazil. John lived most of his life as a resident of Utah, with a few years spent in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Grandpa Oblad loved fishing, motorcycles, and watching football games. He collected coins and spent many hours cooking and preparing meals for others. His love for gastronomy may have blossomed while cooking for the United States Army.
Grandpa enjoyed taking his kids out for dinner and visiting his grandchildren. He was known to many as "Grandpa John" and "Papa John". Some of his signature dishes/recipes are being enjoyed among members of the family to this day.
Grandpa was preceded in death by his spouse Sue Ann Julian; parents Seymour and Elizabeth Oblad; siblings Diane Naylor, and June Beard and Dr. Briant Oblad; son Brian James Oblad and grandson Tanner Oblad. He is survived by his children Jeromy (Jody), Adam (Pam), Andy (Sandra), Brooke (Will), Amy (Robby), and Brian; as well as 19 grandchildren, and one great grandchild!
Funeral services will be held at 6PM on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy Utah. A viewing will take place prior to the services beginning at 5PM.
Graveside services and interment will take place at 9AM on Monday, March 4, 2024 at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
