John Edward Payne,78, of Powhatan, Virginia, peacefully passed away on February 19, 2026 at home, surrounded by loved ones. Born and raised in his beloved Nelson County, Virginia, John recently moved from his longtime residence in Midlothian to Powhatan, carrying with him a lifetime of curiosity and kindness.

John was an enthusiastic sports fan who loved discussing various players and stats with his friends. A proud graduate of Virginia Tech, he rarely missed a Hokies game and faithfully cheered for the Washington "Redskins."

John's love of history and collecting shaped much of his life. He had a special talent for discovering "treasures" at estate sales and auctions, forever noting their value but never wanting to part with any of them. He was always eager to uncover the personal stories behind each piece. His deep interest in the Civil War and especially World War II in later years led him to share collected veterans' memorabilia, ephemera, and personal histories through special exhibits at museums, schools, organizations, and community events-work that touched many and preserved important memories for future generations.

John spent his career with Western Electric, which later became Lucent and then Viasystems, beginning in accounting and ultimately serving in customer service until the plant's closure. He then spent a short stint at Hauni Richmond, Inc. before retirement.

After retiring, he devoted time to the Midlothian Friends of the Library, reflecting his lifelong appreciation for books and learning. He was also an active member of the Powhatan Civil War Roundtable, the local World War II Roundtable, and the Battle of the Bulge Organization. These later relationships were truly valued.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Sydney Bradner Payne; his beloved sons, Brad and Nathan Payne; and granddaughter, Arcadia Payne, all of whom brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Anna Payne of Lynchburg and Elizabeth Slaughter of Concord.

Soft-spoken, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in others, John was a friend to many and a steady, kind presence in every community he joined. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and carry forward his spirit of generosity, independence, and love of history that defined his life.

A private family internment will take place at a later date.
