John A. Penland, a beloved electrical engineer, storyteller, and passionate traveler, passed away on August 5, 2025, in Benton, Arkansas, at the age of 89. Born on October 4, 1935, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, John lived a life filled with curiosity, adventure, and dedication to both his craft and those he cherished.
Throughout his accomplished career, John made significant contributions to the field of electrical engineering, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working alongside him. His professional journey was marked not only by his technical expertise but also by his ability to engage and inspire those around him. Known for his storytelling prowess, John had a unique ability to weave captivating narratives, sharing memories and lessons learned through years of experience.
In addition to his engineering achievements, John was passionate about horses and dogs. He took great pride in showing Alaskan Malamute dogs, a pursuit that combined his love of animals with the joy of competition. His commitment to this hobby reflected his nurturing spirit and attention to detail. Beyond the realm of canines, John found happiness traversing the backroads of the USA, reveling in the beauty of the landscape and the adventures that awaited him around every bend. He also had a penchant for collecting very large rocks, an unusual but endearing hobby that showcased his appreciation for nature's grandeur.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Lu Ann Penland, and his loving family, Steven Lee (Terri) Penland, John Richard Penland, and his step-daughter Debra Sain.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John A. Penland Sr. and Constance Penland, who provided him with a foundation of strength and integrity that he carried throughout his life. John's legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, reminding them of the importance of storytelling, adventure, and a love for the simple joys of life.
