John Mark Pilgrim departed this world on August 11, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on April 3, 1930, in Jackson County, Missouri. John grew to embody the values and virtues that defined an extraordinary life—one devoted to knowledge, family, and steadfast commitment to those pursuits that stirred his soul.
John’s education began at William Chrisman High School, where he established himself as a diligent student, eventually pursuing engineering at Finlay Engineering College. His curiosity for mechanics and electronics led him to work initially as a technician in a radio and television repair company, satiating his interest in electronics. This fascination eventually blossomed into a formidable career, notably as the head of special projects at Black and Veatch for over 40 years. It was here that John's profound understanding of engineering, allowed him to tackle projects that many would turn away from. In addition to his engineering career, John became a professor at Finlay College where he taught for over 14 years. John possessed a delightful sense of humor, complemented by an innate humbleness. He was the kind of person who never sought the limelight; instead, he let his accomplishments speak for themselves. John carried a deep love for his family, holding them and the cherished four-legged members of his household dear, always prioritizing their well-being and comfort. Beyond his professional and family commitments, John embraced leisure with equal fervor. He found joy in the simple pleasures of fishing and listening to country music. These moments were a testament to his zest for life, an expression of the balance he struck between hard-earned responsibilities and moments of tranquility.
John's passing was preceded by his parents, Delbert and Daisy Pilgrim, and his beloved wife of 72 incredible years, Sadonna Pilgrim. His legacy lives on through his children, Michael Pilgrim (Linda), Denise Allen, and Darin Pilgrim (Cynthia); his grandchildren, Brock Dolak (Adam), Brad Pilgrim, Adrianna Norng (Videt), Jeremiah Allen, Lucas Pilgrim, and Jessica Gentry (Michael), as well as four great-grandchildren.
The legacy of John Mark Pilgrim will be honored with a visitation at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri, on August 21, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral service starting at 10:30 AM. A graveside service will conclude John's services at 12:00 PM, providing a final opportunity for family and friends to gather in celebration of a life well-lived.
