John Plummer Obituary

PLUMMER, JOHN CHARLES
76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on August 11, 2021. He was the beloved husband of Dale Ann (Sala) for 53 years. His legacy is carried on by his three sons: John D. Plummer (wife Marina), Mark A. Plummer, and Eric B. Plummer, all of Warwick. He also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren who brought him boundless joy: Siena V. Plummer, John (Jack) L. Plummer, and Caroline D. Plummer; his brothers-in-laws: C. Robert Sala and Carleton (Butch) Waugh, and sister-in-law, Candace L. Waugh; and his nieces and nephews. Born in Worcester, MA, he was the son of the late John V. and Eleanor (Schultz) Plummer and the brother of Patricia Strater.
A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, John was a math teacher for over 45 years teaching at Moses Brown, the East Greenwich school system, and at Bishop Hendricken High School. He was proud to lead the Archie Cole Junior High School Math counts team to two State Championships. At Hendricken he was honored as "Man of the Year" in 2010 and was proud to be a member of the first graduating class of 1962. As a teacher, he made it a priority to always stay after hours to provide extra help to any student. He also enjoyed coaching golf, club sports, and directed many memorable Hendricken ski-club trips. Most of all teaching and enhancing the lives of others defined John's life. He was never happier and more humbled when former students approached or greeted him with stories of his teaching days. Among his last words were "I like helping people."
John also worked as a night dispatcher at the Providence Steamboat Company (later McAllister Towing). At McAllister he was proud to take part in the Hasbro Children's Hospital "Good Night Lights" program. Additionally, he worked as a window washer for over 35 years. He was also proud of serving his country in the United States Army Reserve, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. He famously incorporated his skills as a drill sergeant into his parenting and teaching methods.
John was an avid traveler, making annual trips to Maine, Canada, and Florida with his family, and always sought out new places to explore. He loved gardening, skiing, and quahogging. He could always be found meticulously caring for his lawn and gardens. John was well versed on a wide range of topics and loved reading.
In later years, John enjoyed spending time with his family – especially babysitting and playing with his grandchildren. He frequently walked the neighborhood, greeted neighbors, worked on puzzles, watched sporting events with his sons, celebrated family traditions, and relished quality time with his wife.
Family and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 27th, 10:00 AM, at St. Mary's Church, Cranston, R.I., with a private burial following. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Little Sisters of the Poor of Pawtucket, RI.

John was my colleague at Bishop Hendricken HS for several years. But I first met him many years ago, at the State Math Counts competition. John was a true professional, he was a great teacher and a better person. We had many converstations concerning our profession and it was a pleasure to have had the opportunity work with John.. His legacy of helping and caring for his students will live on in the hearts of his students from BHHS...my Prayers to his family and friends...Bob Fuoroli

Both of my children had Mr. Plummer at Cole Jr High and loved him. He was a wonderful teacher and wanted to make sure the kids learned and to this day my daughter is so impressed bcuz Mr Plummer could write on the board with his left and right hand at the same time and that was back in `91.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family as he was a very special man.

A mentor at East Greenwich Junior High who became a friend as the years passed by ... Mr. Plummer, you positively influenced the lives of many young people while challenging our minds mathematically and intellectually. Your ability to find the talents and the good within each of us was an art you mastered. I can say with confidence that you left this world a better place than you found it. Rest peacefully and with pride in the life you lived.

I remember your husband/dad so fondly. He was my math teacher in junior high (East Greenwich). EVERYONE LOVED HIM! I am 57 years old now, so this is going back many years. I wanted to let you know what a wonderful teacher he was, touching so many lives. I teach middle school now myself, so I can appreciate what he did with his students even more! I hope your many memories give you peace at this difficult time.

Ahh ... Mr. Plummer. You were my math teacher at Moses Brown back in 1974. I remember your physical presence that loudly spoke "You had better finish your homework!" Your command of the classroom came naturally, and we all respected your ability to teach us things that we didn't know, but would certainly use in our lives ahead. You ranked high in my personal hierarchy of best teachers. I know you will find peace now.

To your family - We hope that your pleasant memories provide comfort in the days ahead.

I taught with John at East Greenwich Junior High. I coached the cross country team there, and John filled in for me once when I was unable to attend a meet. I remember him jogging after school. He was such a nice guy, and his students loved him.
