John Porcaro Obituary

Porcaro, John
ALBANY - John A. Porcaro, 83, passed away peacefully, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, after a short illness. Born in Albany, he was the youngest son of the late Leonard and Mary Durso Porcaro, and a graduate of Philip Schuyler High School.
John worked for the Department of Tax and Finance on the Harriman Campus for 38 years, after which he enjoyed a long relaxing retirement. John stayed true to his L.A. (Lower Albany) roots where he was born, raised and educated. Those old neighborhoods', St Anthony's and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception hold a special place for all who called it home and especially for John. After their "disappearance" in 1963 he never went far. Eventually he returned 20 years later in 1983, remained, and from his balcony he could oversee it all. His wonderful memories and humorous stories always brought it back in vivid color against the cold concrete and marble. Even then he embraced and spent his time walking and enjoying people and all the festivities and fairs throughout the years. Many people over the years would say "hey, I saw Uncle Jonny." Even in his declining years John cared for his buddy, Michael, who suffered from Alzheimer's, and made his last few years here safe and comfortable. His sweet nature and humble way will stay in the hearts of all who knew him and forever remain a part of those beautiful neighborhoods he called home. He surely received a warm welcome from all, with old shrimp cocktail glasses raised up high, filled to the brim with Uncles Oliver and Louie's homemade beet and dandelion wine, Ma Don...Alla Salute.. rest easy Uncle Johnny... you are home again!!
John was predeceased by his siblings, Vincent, Caroline, Virginia Leonard, Marie, and Frank. Also his close friends, John Ernst and Michael Phillips. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Anita (Leonard) and Pat (Frank). He was the proud Cumpari (goombah) of Zachary Lanahan. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank all who showed love, respect and support over the last six months at OLOMLC, especially all the CNAs and RNs. Personal thanks to my friends Tina, Lisa and Eugenia. Also thank you to Community Hospice. Varsha, Millie, and the rest of their amazing crew. A bright light in a dark moment. Most definitely Angels. As per Johnny's wishes, there will be no calling hours, that's a stretch, and he will be placed with his parents and others at St. Agnes Cemetery, with a graveside ceremony in the spring.
