John William Powell, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on August 18, 2025 at the age of 73. He was born in Halifax County on January 30, 1952 to the late John Hagood Powell and the late Thelma Moorefield Powell. He was married to Brenda P. Powell who survives.
He was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church as well as Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department, and covenant member of Union Christian Church in Virgilina. John believed in giving back to the community and did so in numerous ways. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching his grandsons play soccer, cooking and canning. His passing will leave a void in all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Brenda P. Powell; daughters, Misty Glass (Gregory) of Scottsburg, Joanie Cranford (John) of Buffalo Junction; three grandsons, Ashton and Colby Cranford of Buffalo Junction and Cory (Savonna) Glass of Christiansburg. He also leaves behind his sisters, Eleanor Stevens (Marvin) of Danville, Nancy Stillman (Bill) of South Boston, Linda Moorefield (Butch) of Bassett, and Carolyn Childrey (Bill) of Halifax, Catherine Bebber of Vero Beach, FL, Arlene Weatherford (Calton) of Danville, and Shelby Gravitt (Chris) of South Boston and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Powell.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 23 at 3:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Norman Talley officiating. Burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:30 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at Misty and Greg’s home, 2090 Coleman Rd. Scottsburg.
