John Powell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Funeral Home on Feb. 6, 2026.
John Douglas Powell passed away on February 4, 2026, in Marion. Visitation will be held Monday, February 9, 2026, at Cedar Memorial Park State Room from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Funeral Service at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories will be held February 10, 2026 at 11:00 am. Burial will be at 2:00 pm at Troy Mills Cemetery in Troy Mills, Iowa.
He was born on May 14,1934 in Cedar Rapids, IA to Edwin and Berniece (Simmons) Powell. John grew up in Troy Mills, Iowa where he met the love of his life, Merry Carol Cherry. They married in 1955 and moved to Anchorage, Alaska where John served in the U.S. Army for two years. After the military, he went into business with his father at E. Powell & Son. The family business grew to include his wife, his mother, sister, brother-in-law and son. He retired after 40 years in the company. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona.
Throughout his work and personal life, he touched the lives of many people with his warmth and outgoing nature. He was a generous person and had the ability to talk with just about anyone.
The greatest joy in his life was his family and he never missed a chance to tell them that. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Merry, his children Kim (Don) Casteel, Doug (Alica) Powell, Lisa (Larry) Lamb, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, infant brother, grandson, and infant great-grandson.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Views of Marion and Moments Hospice for the compassionate care provided to John and his family.

Memorial contributions may be given to Camp Courageous in Monticello.
