John Protain Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 17, 2026.
John C. "Pro" Protain, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

John was born May 30, 1954, in Youngstown, the son of the late Louis H. and Frances (Wetherbee) Protain. He was a 1972 graduate of East High School, where he played both baseball and football. Following graduation, he continued his football career at Kansas University.

John proudly served in the United States Army from 1973 to 1979 as a Surveillance Radar Crewman. His final overseas assignment was in the Republic of Korea.

He was employed at Youngstown Sheet and Tube until its closure and later worked at Austintown Tool and Die, where he served as Chief Shop Steward, Kraft maid Cabinetry, and Amazon Warehouse, John enjoyed staying active in his spare time. He played softball for more than 20 years and spent over two decades umpiring both softball and baseball. He also enjoyed playing pool, bowling, and participating in Texas Hold'em poker games wherever he could find one. A passionate sports fan, John faithfully supported the Dallas Cowboys and the Ohio State Buckeyes. On warm days, he especially loved riding his motorcycle.

One of John's greatest joys earlier in life was coaching his daughters' softball team, St. Michael's in Campbell. During his six seasons as head coach, the team went undefeated five times, compiling an impressive 49–1 record. In recent years, he found great happiness in attending his grandchildren's sporting events and activities.

Those who knew John knew him to be outspoken and never shy about sharing his opinions. If he liked you, you knew it - and if he didn't, you probably knew that too. He loved joking, telling the same stories repeatedly, and always had something to say. John also truly enjoyed spending time with his friends, whether it was sharing a few laughs, playing cards or pool, or just sitting around talking. While some might say he was a man of many words, those closest to him knew he would go out of his way to help anyone. Above all, he took immense pride in and had deep love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne F. Protain.

He is survived by his brother, James (Rosemary) Protain of Struthers; Debra L. Protain of Champion; and his five children: Stacy (fiancé Ryan Piszczek) Hill of Florida, Kimberly (Thomas) Strimple of Champion, Randi (Matt) McElhinny of Champion, Kristy (Chris) Olinik of Austintown, and Christopher Protain of Champion. He also leaves behind sixteen grandchildren - David, Patrick, Jacob, Emily, Caityn, Logan, Braydon, Jordan, Breanna, Brianna, Branden, Austin, Brianna, Kayla, Karly, and Christopher (Ty) - as well as four great-grandchildren: David, Bradley, Parker, and Mason.

John is also survived by his nephews, James Protain Jr. and Dr. Joseph (Dr. Alison) Protain, along with several great nieces.

He will also be dearly missed by the loves of his life, his cats, Stella and Trouble.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday, March 20, from 4 to 5:50 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m. at Fox Funeral Home, with military honors to follow.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Edward J. Fox & Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. Boardman.
