John Quinn passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, January 12, 2024, just shy of his 90th birthday. John was born and raised in the Bronx, NY by Denis and Nellie Quinn who both emigrated to the USA from Ireland in the 1920's.
He joined the Navy at 17 which sparked his lifelong love of travel. He met his lovely wife Kathleen in his early 20's. They both dreamed of a big family and after marrying had 7 children. John's greatest joy was spending time with his family. Weekends were filled with adventures to parks, beaches, and other outdoor activities. All were welcome and the car was packed with a picnic basket and as many neighborhood kids who could fit. He had a great sense of humor and you may remember such long running jokes as: "what happened to the hole in the donut" and the "green chicken".
After working for the telephone company for more than 35 years he enjoyed a long and happy retirement. He had strong bonds to his Irish relatives and regularly travelled to Ireland. He loved cruising with Kathleen and other family members and literally travelled the world on more than 38 cruises. A regular communicant of Saint Ann's Church, John enjoyed serving as a lector and Eucharistic minister taking communion to hospitals and nursing homes for many years.
John loved music and played the violin. He could be counted on to join his sister Nancy Stern as she played the piano on Christmas Eve every year. John is survived by his seven children: Denis, John (Suzanne), Maureen Wood (Rich), Eileen (Bo Yahara), Kristine, Michael (Christine), and Patrick (Allison); his grandchildren: Mitchell Quinn (Gizem), Douglas Quinn, Dylan Quinn (Brianna), Luke Quinn (Arianna), Tara Wood, Hal Steiner (Emily), Sophia Jimenez, Max Jimenez, Kaitlin Quinn (Juliet), Kara Quinn, Brian Quinn, Delaney Quinn, and Ashlyn Quinn; great grandchildren Kai, Ash, & Cassiopeia Quinn, Hal, Kieran & Leona Steiner, and Zara, Kai & Athena Thobani.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Kathleen to whom he was happily married for over 60 years.
Services will be held at Laurel Funeral Home in Hazlet on Wednesday, January 17 from 4-7 pm, followed by a funeral mass on Thursday January 18th at 10:00 am at Saint Ann's Church in Keansburg. In lieu of flowers, donations to Saint Ann's Church are appreciated.
