John Radits Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by M. John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains on Feb. 12, 2026.
John Radits, a longtime resident of Pompton Plains, passed away with his family at his side on February 11, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born in Punitz, Austria, John was one of two sons born to the late John and Agnes Radits (nee Marakovits). He immigrated to this country when he was 2 years old. He built a life grounded in dedication to his work, his country, and most importantly, his family.

On October 19, 1957, John married his beloved wife, Joan Azzati, beginning a marriage that would span 55 devoted years until her passing in 2012.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, serving as military police in Japan. He was a dedicated member of American Legion Post 450 in Pequannock. A skilled and respected carpenter, he was a member of Carpenters Local 490, which later merged into Local 124. He worked his way up the ranks first as secretary and then as delegate to the Passaic County District Council of Carpenters. He eventually was elected as business agent to the union and remained in that position until his retirement. He also served as a Trustee to the N.J. Carpenters Funds, a district representative to the N.J. State Council of Carpenters, and was a member of the N.J. State Apprentice Board, where he mentored apprentices into the industry. By a unanimous vote of resolution, he remained an Executive Board Member Emeritus on the State Council after retirement.

As a former athlete in high school, John was an avid sports fan. Above all, he loved the New York Giants. He was a season ticket holder for 65 years, and involved his friends and family in this passion throughout the years. He was also known to attend the horse races, enjoy a good cigar, travel, and maintain a very active social life. Above all else, he treasured the time he spent with his loving family.

John is survived by his loving daughters, Janice DeJohn (Bill Snyder) and Joyce Foukas (George); his cherished grandchildren, Jaclyn DeJohn, Michael DeJohn (fiancée Julia), Luke Foukas (Ashley), and Jacob Foukas; his beloved great-granddaughter, Margo Olympia Foukas; his sister-in-law Carol Jurkouich (Tom), and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife Joan; his brother Joseph Radits; and his parents John and Agnes Radits.

Visiting hours will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday, February 18 at Scanlan's. A funeral Mass will be held 10:00 am Thursday at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church, Pompton Plains. Interment will follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton.

Donations to the American Legion Post 450, 11 Oak Avenue, Pequannock, NJ 07440 in John's name would be appreciated.
