A proud veteran, John served in the United States Army as a paratrooper, where he developed a strong sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. His interests were as diverse as they were engaging; he was an avid racquetball player, enjoyed working on race cars and engines, and found joy in hunting, fishing.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Della Rhoades, of the home; his loving daughters, Carla (Bob) Short of Osseo, WI, and Colleen (Matt) Olsen of Olathe, KS; his brother, Leon Rhoades of Osseo, WI; and his sister, Mary (Gary) Bruce of Moville, IA. He was a cherished grandfather to Danielle, Jamy, Samantha (Brandon), Benjamin (Sherry), Andrea (John), and Alexandra (Kevin), and a proud great-grandfather to John, Breanne, Wyatt, William, Jakelynn, Thomas, Maximum, Oakley, and Luna. He also leaves behind a great-great-grandchild, River.

John was preceded in death by his parents, W.W. Rhoades and Grace Rhoades; his son, Norman Rhoades; his brother, Edward Rhoades; and his sister, Grace Ellen Marchant.
