John Rice Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc. - Fort Ashby on May 30, 2022.
Short Gap, WV-
John Edward Rice, 78, of Short Gap, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many gained his wings on May 27th, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his family.
John was born December 8th, 1943 in Cumberland, MD to the late Charles W. Rice and Elizabeth A. (Bourckel) Rice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Shelia Jean (White) Rice, and his brother, Charles "Butch" Rice.
John was a graduate of LaSalle High School and attended the Annunciation of Our Lord Parish in Fort Ashby, WV. He was also a member of the Short Gap Lions Club.
John was an excellent pipefitter and worked for many years at CSX before retiring.
His favorite hobbies included bow hunting and fishing. He was a big sport enthusiast with his favorite teams being the Washington Nationals, Redskins, and WVU Mountaineers. If he was not cheering on one of his teams, he was likely watching westerns alongside his wife. He was also an avid bowler and enjoyed spending time at the river camping with friends and family. He was an animal lover and leaves behind his loyal companion, Buffy.
John is survived by his son, Richard "Pete" Rice and wife Rose; two granddaughters, Destiney B. Rice and Tiffaney R. Rice; and his two great-grandchildren, Elayna R. Rice and Axel K. Rice. His family was his true passion in life as evidenced by his pride when speaking of them. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Fort Ashby, on Friday June 3rd, 2022 from 3-4 PM. A memorial service will follow at 4 PM, with Pastor Pam Ward officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Short Gap Lions Club, c/o M. Allen Buser, 195 Dixie Lee Drive, Ridgeley, WV 26753.
