Darrell Tichinel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc. - Fort Ashby on Mar. 15, 2026.
Darrell Sheridan Tichinel, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, pastor, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026.

Born in Vindex, Maryland, Darrell was the son of the late George and Juanita Tichinel. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Elizabeth Paugh, Wanda Barnes, Genevieve Davis, Naomi Tichinel, and brother David Tichinel.

Darrell shared 61 loving years with his beloved wife, Phyllis. Together, they raised a family who continues his legacy of faith, love, and service: Darrell Steven (Jake) and his wife Sherrie, Evangeline Laffey and her husband Tim, Jeffrey and his late wife Elizabeth, and Ralph and his wife Maria. He was also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Professionally, Darrell was known for his skill and dedication in auto body work and detailing at Shaffer Ford in Oakland, Maryland. Beyond his trade, he devoted 45 years to serving the Lord as a pastor at Mathias Assembly, Kingwood Assembly, and Bethel Tabernacle Assembly of God in West Virginia. His ministry extended to the men's ministry of the Potomac District and for many years as security at Camp Echo Church Camp. Darrell's life was a testament to his faith, sharing the Gospel, and touching countless lives with his care and compassion.

Darrell loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, floating the South Branch Potomac River and found peace and joy working with his hands, whether as a mechanic, cutting wood, gardening, or tending flowers with Phyllis. He had a gift for telling stories that would often end in laughter and he loved to travel and take trips with his family. His generosity knew no bounds; he spent time overseas building churches and helping those in need around him.

Darrell was under the care of hospice in his final days. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the hospice team for their care, kindness, and compassion during his final days.

Visitation will be held at Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Fort Ashby, on Wednesday, March 18, from 5:00–7:00 PM, and at Walnut Bottom Assembly of God, 1014 Walnut Bottom Road, Swanton, Maryland, on Thursday, March 19, from 12:00–1:00 PM. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM at Walnut Bottom Assembly of God. Interment will be in the Turner Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Old Furnace Covenant Brethren Church, 188 Old Furnace Road, Ridgeley, WV 26753, in honor of Darrell's enduring faith and service.

Darrell Sheridan Tichinel will be remembered as a man of faith, a devoted family patriarch, and a friend to many. His love, dedication, and guidance leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
