John S. "Jack" Rule

San Diego, CA / Dodgeville – John "Jack" Rule, age 91, of San Diego, CA died on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Jack was born in Dodgeville, Wisconsin on May 17, 1933, to Cathryne and Spencer Rule. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and received his Bachelor of Architecture degree in June 1960 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He had to put his architectural studies on hold when drafted during the Korean War.

Jack was a well-known Architect in San Diego having the position of Campus Architect at UCSD, and ultimately he was promoted to the Office of the President, Physical Planning at UC Berkeley as the Vice President, Physical Planning overseeing all the UC campuses. He resigned from the University of California at age 40 to fulfill his goal of having his own architectural firm. He had offices in La Jolla and later in Point Loma. In his latter years, he was hired by several firms as an Expert Witness and worked until he was 82. The Sigma Chi Fraternity was a huge part of his life in both Madison and Illinois. He and Pat maintained lasting friendships with his fraternity brothers and their wives.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Pat of 44 years, four sons, Jeff (Claire), Steve (Cheree), Tim (Tifani), Tom (Cara), two stepdaughters, Leslie Rose and Lisa Record, 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew in Wisconsin.

He will be remembered not only for his big smile and far-reaching professional life, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His kind and collaborative nature will be missed by all who knew him.

There will be a private burial for family at East Side Cemetery in Dodgeville.
