Daniel O. Dirks, age 72, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in Colby, WI, while under the care of Compassus Hospice at Waterford at Colby.

Born on October 21, 1953, in Berlin, WI, Dan was the son of the late Oscar and Leila (Richter) Dirks. He spent his early childhood in Tustin, WI, before relocating to Marathon, WI, where he was raised following his father's career transfer.

Dan graduated from Marathon High School in 1971 and went on to earn an Electronics degree from North Central Technical College in 1973. He began his career at the Hobart Company, later accepting a position with Schulmerich Carillons, where he resided in Alabama and served the southern United States. Following years of professional service, he returned to Madison to pursue further education, completing an Electrical Engineering degree in 1992. His subsequent employment included positions at Norlight Telecommunications in LaCrosse, WI, and MCI in Naperville, IL, both pioneering companies in fiber optics during the 1990s. Upon retirement, he settled in Wausau, WI, contributing to the community as a handyman for area seniors and caring for his brother Ron until he was no longer able.

Throughout his life, Dan maintained a strong passion for electronics, building his own stereo system and amassing a substantial LP and movie collection. An admirer of science fiction, particularly Star Trek, he collected related films and series and enjoyed classic cinema. He demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving family photographs. He cherished time with family, taking joy in seeing photographs of his nieces and nephews. Although known for his reserved demeanor, he was deeply caring toward those close to him.

He is survived by his siblings: Ken (Jean) Dirks of Tomahawk; Justine (Robert) Stolze of Ringle; Nancy (Mark) Loker of Oshkosh; Annette (Patrick) Krautkramer of Marathon; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Diane Blume, his brother Ronald Dirks, and his nephew Jeremy Sonntag.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church in Marathon, officiated by Rev. Jon W. Hadler. Burial will occur at a later date in St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Marathon. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Arrangements are being managed by Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon. Online condolences may be shared at www.petersonkraemer.com.
