John Rypma Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dykstra Funeral Homes Northwood Chapel on Aug. 9, 2025.
John Donald Rypma (or "Rypper") 78, of Holland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at Holland Hospital, surrounded by his family.
John was born on June 28, 1947, in Holland, Michigan, to Don and Julia Rypma. John grew up in Holland with his sisters Judy (Baar) and Nancy (VanDam). He attended Holland High School and Hope College where he built lifelong friendships that carried through every chapter of his life. John also proudly served his country in the Michigan National Guard and was known to be an excellent shot, which carried through to the misfortune of many ducks and pheasants over the years.
John was known for his warm smile, big hugs, and zest for life. Friends remember him as the "life of the party," always ready with a laugh, a story, or an invitation to gather. He loved fishing, skiing, hunting, boating, and golfing, and he poured his heart into hosting friends and family-whether at the beach, on the boat, or around a table. John also loved his dogs and grand dogs and always welcomed his friends' dogs to his beach. His genuine kindness, generous spirit, and love for the outdoors created countless memories for those who knew him.
Over the years, John touched lives across many circles-high school and college friends from Hope, coffee groups, hunting buddies, neighbors, and business acquaintances who became dear friends. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued, leaving a legacy of joy, loyalty, and friendship.
John is survived by his son Steven Rypma, daughter Elizabeth Crotty, daughter-in-law Sarah Rypma, son-in-law Dylan Crotty and his five beloved grandchildren: Aidan and Mia Crotty, and Julia, Penn, and Lauren Rypma. You could always count on seeing "Gaga" or "Beba" on the sidelines of his grandchildren's sporting events and supporting all of their other activities with great pride. He was preceded in death by Judy and Randy Baar and Nancy VanDam.
John will be remembered not only for his passions and adventures but for the way he made people feel welcomed, valued, and loved. His absence leaves a deep hole in many hearts, but his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Thursday August 21 at Christ Memorial Church in Holland at 11:00am. A reception will follow the ceremony at Boatwerks. Friends and family are invited to share stories, laughter, and memories in honor of the man who gave so much to all of us.
In lieu of flowers, John's family is asking that donations be made in John's memory to Community Action House, to give back the Holland community that John cherished so much. For those wishing to make a memorial donation in John's name, donation envelopes will be available at the funeral and reception. Donations may be made via check, as well as online:
