John Schwarzel Obituary

John C. Schwarzel, "Trapper John," of Sigel, passed away Friday, May 23, 2025, surrounded by his family at Penn Highlands Hospital in DuBois, after a brief illness. He was born May 15, 1946, in Penn Hills, to the late Kenneth L. and Mary Evelyn (Ferrington) Schwarzel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Elayne (Deegan) Schwarzel; his brother, Kenneth W. Schwarzel; and his sisters, Janet Allebach and Joanne Shelby-Klein. John graduated from Franklin Regional High School in 1965 and went on to get his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed by Penn Hills School District, where he taught auto body repair and ran the cooperative education program. John was a 32nd degree past master of the Export Masonic Lodge, where he had been a member for over 50 years. He was also a lifelong member of the Murrysville Sportsman's Association, where he was a member of the trap league for many years. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with his grandchildren, and spending time outdoors. He was a passionate hunter and trapper; he especially loved trapping beaver. John is survived by his two children, Christine (Herman) Born, of Calabash, NC, and John "Jack" Schwarzel, of Export; his three granddaughters that he adored, Jenna (Tyler) DuPlessis, of Lancaster, WI, Jillan (David) Newcomer, of Wilmington, NC, and Jaidyn-Marley Schwarzel, of Ypsilanti, MI; and his great-grandson, D.J. Newcomer. He is also survived by his brother and close friend, Joseph E. Schwarzel of Cheswick; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. John's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Penn Highlands Hospital as well as the owners and staff of The Court House Restaurant in Brookville, who were like a second family to him for many years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John's name to the Elk County Humane Society, 1029 East Eschbach Road, St. Marys, PA, 15857. Visitation for John will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 29, 2025, at HART FUNERAL HOME INC., 3103 Lillian Ave., Murrysville, PA. So sorry to hear about John´s passing. He was a very special to me as he always lended help and guidance to me from the time I came to Elk County to work as game warden. I have a fond memory of when I was a rookie introducing himself and giving me his trap tag like his business card so I could get hold of him as needed. He will surely be missed so dearly.

John was my neighbor in Sigel, he was always so very kind, and great with a joke. When my husband past, John would stop by to check on me and would tell me to give a shout should I need anything, such a wonderful man. My deepest sympathy to his family. John you will be missed.

John has been my neighbor for over 13 years even though he was never really home much after Elaine passed away. He has always been kind and we so appreciate that he allowed my son to park in his driveway for the past 2 years. He said he welcomed it since it made it seem as though someone was always home. John you will be missed and condolences to the family.

I´m probably the last remaining Aunt that John and Joe has. And I fondly remember so many years of watching them grow up from birth to manhood. Their Uncle Don helped show them about hunting and enjoying spending time with them throughout his life. I regret that I cannot be there for the service , but old age has caught up with me. My deepest sympathy to Johns family and to his brother Joe who I´m sure will miss their times together! Love and prayers to everyone Aunt Betty Beatty

So sad to hear of John´s passing. Condolences to the families, as he will be deeply missed. Fond memories of his infectious laugh and devilment in those eyes. He always provided a good laugh when needed. Rest easy John.
