Obituary for John Selby Seeley
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Selby Seeley, who departed this life on March 4, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on July 12, 1941, in
Anchorage, Alaska, John lived a life dedicated to education and service, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know him.
John was a distinguished educator, beginning his career as a teacher at Seattle Public Schools from 1965 until 1983, where he inspired countless young minds at Thomson Junior High School and Franklin High School. His dedication to nurturing future generations led him to serve as Assistant Principal at Capital High School in the Olympia School District from 1983 to 1996. He was a champion for his students, embodying the traits that defined his character: inspirational, kindness, loyalty, honesty, and ambition.
He received his early education from St. Martins High School in 1960, followed by a bachelor's degree in education from Seattle University in 1965. His commitment to learning did not waver, as he earned a master's degree from Seattle Pacific University in 1975. John's thirst for knowledge inspired not only his students but also his colleagues and friends.
One of John's greatest pleasures during his career has been assisting high risk students to graduate or to develop a plan for adulthood. His tenacity with the "tough cases", and his abilities to handle details were admired. John had a wonderful sense of humor even when things were stressful.
John continued to stretch intellectually and spiritually during his retirement. He goes on to say, "I want to thank the Olympia School District for the opportunity to be an administrator. The support of our community and parents was greatly appreciated.
John was married to Barbara Hay in 1966 and then remarried Marilyn Bonds in 1996 in Olympia Washington.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Seeley; his sons, Theodore Seeley (Deana) and Christopher Seeley (Tanya); his daughter, Caroline Street (Aaron); and his brother, James Seeley (Sally). Along with ten grandchildren. He also cherished the bonds with his siblings, Joanne Hodel, Helen Seeley, and Theresa Waldock. John was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Lawlor Joseph Seeley; his mother, Helen Marie Seeley; and his brothers, Lawlor Seeley Jr. and David Seeley.
In addition to his family, John was devoted to various philanthropic endeavors. The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the St. Martins University Scholarship Fund or the St. Michael Parish "Shoulder to Shoulder" Fund to honor his legacy of support for education and community service.
As we remember John Selby Seeley, we celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will surely endure. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who carry forward his commitment to kindness and education.
