August 6, 1964-February 17, 2026
We are deeply sorry to announce that on February 17, 2026, we had to say goodbye to John Allen Shuman, 61, of Furman, SC. John, a lowcountry native, was born in Hampton, SC on August 6, 1964, to parents, Annie Marion Deloach Shuman and Cyril M. Shuman.
John was a member of Furman Baptist Church and a local business owner. An avid outdoorsman, John loved to spend his free time hunting, fishing, arrow head hunting, boating in the Savannah River, and off roading on the four-wheeler. He loved gardening, remote control planes, kites, photography, and spending time by the pool, but most of all, he loved spending time with friends and family.
John graduated from The University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of business in 1986. He began his career at Lowe’s in Columbia, SC and went on to become the Soft Lines Manager at Kmart in Scottsboro, Alabama where he met Janet Crawford. John and Janet were engaged in August 1988 and married in July 1989. They had a son named Adam, and built a home in Furman, SC.
John was the owner and operator of Shuman’s Grocery in Robertville, SC from 1991-2013. He spent his retired years enjoying the low country with friends and family, always living life to its fullest.
He was predeceased by his parents, Cyril M. Shuman and Annie Marion Deloach Shuman, his brother Steven Cyril Shuman, his nephew Lee Boyd, and his niece Stacey Shuman.
He is survived by his son John Adam Shuman, and granddaughter Mila Jane Shuman, his two sisters, Dianne Patterson and Sally Boyd. Additional Survivors: Valerie Wolfter (Niece), James Patterson (Nephew), Casey Gelvin (Niece).
The family will receive friends for lunch on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 12:30pm at Furman Baptist Church, 121 Rabon Street Furman, SC 29921 and a funeral service will be held at 2pm.
