John "Barry" Smith, age 75, of Springfield, passed away Monday, October 20, 2025 at The Residence of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Saturday, October 25th in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Bro. Adam Hodges officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Memorial Gardens with Mac Baggett Jr., Steve Artz, Roger Turns, Jim Smith, Reynolds Boyd, and Ronnie Smith serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are all of his many pipeline co-workers and friends.
The family will receive friends from 2-8pm Friday, and again from 10am until time of the service at 1pm Saturday, at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born November 9, 1949, in Springfield, to the late James Smith, and the late Dorothy Cox Smith. Barry grew up on a farm and was running a dozer at a very young age. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1967 and joined the Army. Barry loved fast cars, drag racing, his pulling truck and Alabama Crimson Tide football. He enjoyed riding his Harley, collecting antique tractors and going to the Smoky Mountains. Mr. Smith was a business man and he owned Barry Smith Enterprises and Barry Smith Transport. He loved being a pipeliner and moving dirt on a dozer. He traveled all over the states, including Alaska, working on the pipeline. He was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 624 in Mississippi, and Barren Plains Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Barry was preceded in death by brothers, Glenn Smith and Gordon Smith; and a sisters-in-law, Diane Smith and Joan Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Tonya Smith; brother, Jimmy Smith; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tony and Debbie Farmer; and his very special cat, Baby Kitty.
