John Allen Smith, a long-time resident of Port St. Joe, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on May 16, 1960, in Brewton, Alabama, John relocated to Port St. Joe in 1973, where he established deep roots and contributed significantly to the local community.
John worked many years at the local papermill and alongside his beloved wife, Gracie Smith, he was a proud co-owner of Gracie's Bar, a beloved establishment that became a central gathering place in Port St. Joe. Their joint efforts exemplified their partnership both personally and professionally, leaving a lasting impact on those who frequented the bar.
John was an avid FSU football fan, passion shared with many in his community. He also loved attending the Daytona Speedway with his friends to witness the exhilaration of the races. In addition to motorsports, he found great pleasure in kayaking, often sharing these outdoor adventures with his close circle of buddies.
Mr. Smith is survived by his lovely wife, Gracie Smith; his son, Paul Potts II; stepdaughter, Marsha Ladd; and stepson, Paul Potts. He also leaves behind his sisters, Carol Rudd and Martha Pridgeon, as well as his niece, Shannon Pridgeon, and nephew, Sean Pridgeon. Their presence will continue to honor his memory and the many ways he enriched their lives.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Miller; father, Harold Smith; and sister, Jane Smith.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of John Allen Smith will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026,at 10:00 Eastern Time at Holly Hill Cemetery, located in Port St. Joe, FL. Friends and family are invited to gather to remember his enduring legacy and the meaningful connections he fostered throughout his life.
