John David Smoak

John "Jerry" David Smoak Jr., 80, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on November 20, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on November 21, 1944, in Charleston to the late John David Smoak, Sr. and Elizabeth Burnett Smoak Monahan, Jerry built a life marked by faith, loyalty, and dedication to his community.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Jerry served as a Staff Sergeant and Officer in Charge of Life Support for the 18th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron from 1968-1972. After his military service, he returned home to Charleston, where he established a successful career as an advertising executive, remembered for his warmth and creative mind. He spent decades shaping the local advertising industry and later retired as a vice president at Advertising Service Agency (ASA). His contributions were recognized with two high honors: President of the Advertising Federation of Charleston (1982-1983) and the prestigious American Advertising Federation Silver Medal Award (1991).

Jerry's faith was the steady compass of his life. He was a lifelong member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served with devotion as both deacon and elder. He believed deeply in service and community, co-chairing Hands Across Charleston in 1986, the local effort supporting the nationwide Hands Across America, raising funds and awareness to combat hunger and homelessness.

The great joy of Jerry's life began on a first date at a Roberta Flack concert in October 1973, when he met Margaret "Sue" Burns, who would become the love of his life and wife of over 50 years. They married on April 26, 1975, and shared a life rooted in commitment and unwavering partnership.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, and their two sons: John David Smoak III (wife, Angie) and Baxter Brailsford Smoak (wife, Suzanne). He was a doting and adored grandfather to Grayson, Caroline, Abigail, Elloise, Beau, Liv, and Alayna, who knew him for his gentle wit and steadfast encouragement.

He is also survived by his two sisters, Joyce Smoak Reeves and Carol Smoak Patrick, along with many extended family members and lifelong friends who were blessed to know his humor, his steadiness, and his warm presence.

Jerry lived simply, served humbly, and loved deeply. His legacy endures in the community he helped shape, the church he served, and the friends and family he treasured.

A Witness to the Resurrection and giving thanks to his life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 25th at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Charleston Oncology and Roper St. Francis Hospice for their support and care during Jerry's time of greatest need. Donations in lieu of flowers are requested to the Good Samaritan Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
