John Howard Sonney, age 80, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at his home in Monroe, NC. He was the youngest of nine children, born to Don Arthur Bernard and Minerva Gertrude Bessie Sonney, on September 2, 1944 in Erie PA.
In 1962 John graduated from Wattsburg Area High School and entered the United States Army in 1963,where he served proudly until 1969. His career path took him from food broker to auxiliary police officer, salesman and finally to being a supervisor at Geico Insurance Company. John truly enjoyed his job at Geico and maintained a relationship with many of the people he met there.
While he may have retired in 2011, John never sat still and always had a project to work on, such as building decks. In 2014 John and Diane moved from Virginia Beach, VA to twelve acres in Lafayette, TN where he could spend time with his brother and a wide selection of animals. His final move brought him to Monroe in 2023 so he could be closer to his youngest daughter.
Preceding him to heaven are his Mother, Father and seven siblings. John is survived by his wife of 50 years Cynthia Diane Sonney; their children: Karen Miculita and her husband, Jonathon Miculita II of Virginia Beach, VA; Sonney Davenport and her wife, Beth Davenport of Matthews, NC; grandsons Jacob and Dylan Miculita; brother Dennis "Butch" Sonney of Lafayette, TN and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
While we have lost our beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, many have lost a friend, the world lost an immensely talented handyman, the animal kingdom lost a caretaker who had room in his world for horses, racoons, ducks, guinea pigs, birds, dogs, and chickens and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has lost a faithful member. John will always be a beloved soul who touched many lives and will be remembered by all for his never ending love and care.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 15th, 2024 at 5:00pm at Holland Funeral Service located at 806 Circle Drive Monroe NC, 28110
